Pause and think of the people who, at a moment’s notice, have to be ready for anything. Maybe your list includes first responders, teachers, parents, pilots, surgeons, or pastors. But does your list include you?
As followers of Jesus, we are called to…
… be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect … 1 Peter 3:15 NIV
Our hope comes from knowing Jesus and putting our faith in His sacrificial life, death, and resurrection. This is great news for us and for everyone on earth. But often, people won’t hear the good news unless someone tells them.
3 Tips for Sharing Your Faith
Today, right where you are—in your workplace, neighborhood, family, and friend group, God wants you to bring the good news of Jesus Christ. And you're never alone in this call to bring the gospel to the world. The Bible says that God promises His Spirit will be with you and lead you, giving you the right words to say as you step out in faith (John 14:26).
How do you start sharing your faith with the people around you? Let’s explore three helpful tips to help you get started.
1. Live Like Jesus Loved
When you live like Jesus, people are drawn to Jesus in you.
Do we want people to learn about God’s love? We need to show God’s love to people. Do we want people to learn about Jesus’ grace and compassion? We need to be grace-filled and compassionate. Do we want people to give generously? We need to be good stewards of our money. Do we want people to study God’s Word? We need to study it for ourselves.
When you give Jesus control over your life, you allow His love, joy, and hope to transform you. As this happens, your life becomes an act of worship that reveals His hope within you.
2. Be a Friend
Wherever Jesus went, He made new friends. Often, these friends had questionable pasts and held opposing beliefs. Yet Jesus still spoke, ate, and spent time with them. He learned their stories, past pain, and hopes for the future, and treated them with love and care.
It’s tempting to only befriend people who think, act, and believe like you. It’s great to have friendships with relatable people. But if we want to share our faith and make an impact on the world around us, it’s essential that we expand our friend groups.
So, get to know the people around you. Learn the stories of your friends, coworkers, or someone waiting in line with you at a coffee shop. Don’t treat them like a project or a box to check off on your evangelism scorecard. Treat them like Jesus would—as a friend.
3. Be Bold and Kind
We’ve all seen or heard of street preachers who warn about the apocalypse while waving signs demanding repentance. While that’s certainly one strategy for sharing your faith, it might not be the most effective.
Now let’s go to the other extreme—the person who never shares their faith out of fear. Maybe they’re afraid of how people will respond and how it might impact their relationships. Or they might be afraid of failing or saying the wrong thing.
If we want to share our faith effectively, we must be bold and kind. Boldness to share, even when we’re afraid, and kindness as we respond, even if the person disagrees. More on Sharing Your Faith
You’ll notice we didn’t share a lot about what to say in faith conversations. That’s intentional. Sharing your faith starts with how you live. In most circumstances, a Jesus-imitating, bold-yet-kind friend is going to be much more effective in sharing their faith than someone with the “right” words.
So as you step into conversations about God, faith, and the Bible, don’t worry about having the right arguments to back up your case. Instead, simply be a friend and ask God for the right words to say when the moment comes.
